Actionable Ideas, In Words, On Stage, In Practice.

I write, speak, and teach about generosity. Much of what I know began with someone being generous to me.

What people have taught me

Behind every gift is a person worth understanding.

What they care about. What they hope for. What they've lived through.

Zach Barnett, seated on a bench

Generosity was part of my life before it became my work. People shared what they knew, showed up for me, and said things I still carry.

Working in major gifts fundraising, I've learned how much sits behind someone's decision to give: who they love, what they value, what they hope their life might mean. Reducing generosity to an amount leaves too much of the person out.

People have skills, connections, and experience they want to share, too. Often, they need help finding where to begin.

That's what I write, speak, and teach about: putting what we have to work for someone else. I'm still in fundraising. Still learning from the people in front of me.

A few things about me

  • My work

I'm a major gift officer. I spend my days talking with people about what matters to them and how they want to give.

  • My writing

Rethinking Generosity, every Monday. A book, workbook, and journal in the works.

  • My podcast

People Are The Point Podcast. Conversations about what people do with what they have been given.

  • My speaking

Keynotes, workshops, and leadership sessions that help people put generosity into practice.

  • The practice I teach

    See. Move. Stay. Act.

  • The rest of life

Family. Long walks. The notebook I keep losing.

Generous Humans

How Generous Humans began

I sat on the other side of the table for ten years.

As a major gift officer I helped raise some of the largest gifts in the field. In every one of those rooms I watched the same thing happen: everyone worked on the gift, and nobody brought the giver any clarity.

People were asked for a number before anyone asked them what they actually wanted their giving to accomplish. What to give. In what form. On what timeline. To whom, and why. Those questions belong to the giver, and they were being decided by whoever asked best.

So I built Generous Humans to help people get clear before the ask.

No charity to steer anyone toward and no financial plan to protect. Just the room, the framework, and the time to work out what is actually yours to give, so your generosity is decided on purpose.

Generous Humans

Generous Humans is the community side of this work. It's where the writing, the conversations, and the practice come together for people who want to put what they have to work for someone else.

Impact timeline

Eight years, one direction.

  1. 2018

    First ask

Stepped into major gifts fundraising and learned the craft of the ask, the scripts, the strategy, the numbers behind a signature.

  2. 2020

    The turn

Noticed the pattern behind every gift: a person quietly deciding what their life is going to mean. The ask never left room for that conversation.

  3. 2021

    Started writing

Began publishing short essays from inside real conversations about money, mission and meaning, one a week, no theory without a table.

  4. 2023

    Took it out loud

Started speaking to foundations, companies, conferences and faith communities about moving towards people instead of only asking them.

  5. 2025

    A working framework

See. Move towards. Stay. Act., shaped into a framework advisors and teams can practice, not just nod at.

  6. Today

    Still inside it

Eight years in the generosity space, still trying to do this differently from within the system that trained me.

Write. Speak. Teach.

  1. 01

    Write

I write about the moments that make me stop and look again. Rethinking Generosity is where I share those stories and one small way to respond.

  2. 02

    Speak

I bring these conversations into rooms where people work, worship, learn, and lead together. We explore what they can offer and what they can do next.

  3. 03

    Teach

See. Move. Stay. Act. Notice the person. Go first. Keep showing up. Follow through. A practice to return to until generosity becomes part of how we live.

If this matters to you too, let's talk.

If you'd like to bring these ideas to your team or community, tell me about your people. Or begin with a letter from me on Monday.
